Riverkings win game in Spooner.
For the final time in the regular season, the Wisconsin Rapids Riverkings met with the Northwest Express on Saturday, January 18.
Despite trailing early, the Riverkings finished strong as they earned a 4-1 victory.
Rapids and Northwest split the regular season series at 2-2 as the Riverkings are in second place overall in the standings with 52 points, trailing the Minnesota Squatch, as they have 54 and are at the top of the USPHL North Division standings.
Rapids returns home on Jan. 24 and 25 when they host the Minnesota Mullets at the South Wood County Recreation Center with puck drop being slated for 7pm both nights.
The third time was the charm for the Nekoosa/Assumption/Port Edwards Wrestling team as they held its first home invite on Saturday, January 18.
It had planned to host it in 2023 and 2024, but poor weather forced N/A/PE to cancel it.
The Papermakers got four champions on the day with Rylan Oleson (100), Amiya Leverance (114), and Lexie Stoflet (235) all in the Girls Division with Sawyer Ostrum, (132) and Joseph Bertling (215) winning gold in the Boys Division.
The Girls won the team title with 112.5 points, while the Boys were third with a score of 132.5.
Neillsville/Greenwood/Loyal won the Boys division with a score of 155.
On January 16, long- time broadcaster, Bob Uecker, passed away at the age of 90.
Uecker was the play-by-play radio broadcaster for the Milwaukee Brewers since 1971, after playing in the big leagues from 1962-1967. He played for Braves, Cardinals, and Phillies, where he won the 1964 World Series with the Cardinals. Uecker was known for his sense of humor which got him roles on Mr. Belvedere, the Major League movies. He enjoyed multiple appearances on Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show, as well as spots in Miller Lite commercials.
