WAUSAU, Wis. (WXCO) – This one will pack a punch with widespread snow set to strike the state on Friday, bringing accumulations of over a half foot to some spots.
Snow will strike on Valentine’s Day, starting in the afternoon and continuing overnight. A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued, starting at 2 PM west, 4 PM central and 6 PM east.
Once the snow starts it looks to ramp up rather quickly, here’s a look at how much snow should be on the ground at 9 PM Valentine’s night.
In total, it’ll lay down a widespread 2-5″ by morning. Right now some spots in central Wisconsin and near Lake Michigan could wake up to over a half foot of snow on the ground. (Areas in purple below).
Snow looks to continue into Saturday morning, getting heavier along a band setting up in southern parts of the state. Another 1-3″ is possible with that.
Behind that, another blast of light snow may swing through the state on Sunday. This will arrive along a cold front adding a few more inches possible. That would push totals across Wisconsin nearing 10″ in some spots by the time the weekend ends.
So right now is the time to gather supplies and make sure you have everything you need for not only yourself but others as well. See if neighbors need a hand, if they have enough groceries and pet food and I’d seriously reconsider going out on a date. But if you do, have an emergency kit in your car. Things like kitty litter for traction, a shovel, extra hat and gloves, hand warmers, blanket, flashlight and battery banks are perfect. And as always drive slow and don’t be in a rush.
There is good news with the snowfall. The annual American Birkebeiner race held in Sawyer county will take place as normal this year thanks to the last minute snow. Another 4-6” or so expected to hit Hayward in this Valentines Day storm.
Race officials say participants will be able to complete the full traditional course, after being forced to change it last year. The full course begins in Cable and takes thousands of skiers all the way to downtown Hayward. But lackluster snow conditions in 2024 it forced organizers to create a loop stuck in the Cable area only.
So Birkie Fever is ON! The race is set to take place on Saturday February 22nd. Don’t forget to bring the cowbells!
