MILWAUKEE, Wis (Civic Media) – Wisconsin residents have until October 7 to voice their opinions on We Energies’ proposed rate hikes for 2025 and 2026. The utility company filed a request with the Public Service Commission in April, seeking increases for both electric and natural gas services.

A We Energies spokesperson said the proposal aims to recover costs for renewable energy projects, including solar centers in Kenosha, Rock, and Walworth counties. The plan also focuses on improving grid resilience and reducing outages.

If approved, typical residential electric bills could increase by $11.92 monthly, or $143 annually. Gas bills are expected to rise between $4 and $8 per month.

The proposal includes savings from closing old coal units in Oak Creek and federal tax credits for new renewable facilities. This would mark We Energies’ third rate increase in three years, following rates that didn’t change in 2021 and 2022.

Public hearings were held this week in Milwaukee and Racine.  Public comment on the project will be accepted through October 7.  You can submit thoughts here.

The Commission is expected to make a decision by year-end.
