WAUWATOSA, Wis. (WAUK) — They’re taking trolling to a new level in Wauwatosa. A new giant troll sculpture by internationally acclaimed artist Thomas Dambo is set to become a centerpiece in Wauwatosa’s upcoming park on 116th Street. Scheduled for installation in spring 2025, the unique artwork will be Dambo’s first piece in Wisconsin, adding to his global collection of sculptures made from recycled materials.
The Wauwatosa Tourism Commission announced the project, highlighting its potential to position the city as a vibrant arts destination. “We are thrilled to bring Thomas Dambo’s incredible artistry to Wauwatosa,” said Beth Gleesing, Tourism Specialist for the city. The sculpture is expected to attract both residents and tourists, boosting local businesses and enhancing the city’s cultural appeal.
Dambo, known for his imaginative and sustainable creations, aims to place a troll sculpture in every U.S. state. A statement says his work aligns with Wauwatosa’s commitment to sustainability and community involvement. The giant troll will be constructed entirely from recycled materials, emphasizing eco-friendly art and inspiring visitors to consider environmental impacts.
The sculpture is funded through hotel and motel taxes, which are designated for tourism and community attractions. These funds, collected from visitors staying in local accommodations, ensure that the project supports tourism without impacting city services like education or infrastructure.
Peggy Williams-Smith, President & CEO of Visit Milwaukee, expressed enthusiasm for the project, noting its potential to become a must-see attraction. “Iconic public works of art can inspire imaginations and drive tourism to a region,” she said. The installation is expected to draw visitors from the Greater Milwaukee area and beyond, further solidifying Wauwatosa’s reputation as an arts hub.
