MADISON, Wis. (WMDX) – Northwoods League Softball has named Raquel Savoy as the head coach to lead Madison’s new collegiate softball team. With over a decade of coaching at the collegiate level, Savoy will begin recruiting players to the team, and hire assistant coaches to complete the teams staff.
“My goal as the Head Coach of Madison Softball is to bring in a group of athletes that are fiery and fun to watch, but most of all that really want to grow the game,” Savoy said in a statement. “The Northwoods League is doing something really awesome. I think that any time we can grow the game for fans and for kids, I think it’s phenomenal. I’m really looking forward to being a part of that and being a part of the Madison community this summer.”
Savoy will come to Madison from California, where she has coached a number of collegiate softball teams since 2013. Most recently, Savoy has served as a volunteer Assistant Coach at the University of California-Berkeley since 2019. Savoy also owns and operates a private softball training company.
“Raquel is the perfect addition to Madison Softball in year one,” said Madison Softball General Manager Samantha Rubin. “Her knowledge of the game as well as her passion for growing the sport is unparalleled. In our conversations, she has shown a tremendous desire to ingrain herself within the Madison community and connect with the surrounding youth softball leagues to help grow the game.”
Now that the team has a head coach, they now need a name. Starting today, Madison softball is holding an official “Name the Team” bracket competition. Fans can vote for 16 names in head-to-head match-ups in several rounds of voting, each round lasting one week. After three rounds of voting, the team will choose a name from the fan-voted final four. The winning team name will be announced in April.
The Madison Softball team will host the La Crosse Steam at the Duck Pond at their home opener on Sunday, June 16.
